Cheltenham Lido

A Guide to Cheltenham Lido

Cheltenham is famous for its many spas, regency architecture, and racecourses. But did you know it’s home to one of the UK’s most beautiful lidos?

Sandford Parks Lido, a highly treasured, grade II listed heated pool, can be enjoyed from March to October. The Lido, with an intriguing history, is surrounded by beautiful gardens and offers a range of classes in addition to a refreshing swim.

Whether you are planning a trip to our lovely town of Cheltenham or want to learn more about the British lido culture, dive into this informative blog below.

The History of Cheltenham Lido

As you may already know, Cheltenham is a historic town dating all the way back to the Middle Ages. In the early 20th century, however, is when Cheltenham’s infamous lido came to be.

Established in 1935, the Cheltenham outdoor swimming pool has grown to be a huge part of the heritage in the area. Eager early-morning risers, summer evening dwellers, and children learning to perfect their swimming skills all visit the lido today.

Originally purchased as land for allotments in 1927, seven years later in 1934, the lido agreement was settled and soon after, construction began.

The grand opening of the lido took place in 1935, with residents eager to be able to finally swim outdoors in a designated spot. Over the years, plenty of conservation has taken place to preserve the lido, including a major refurbishment in 2006.

Planning a Visit to Cheltenham Lido

As well as a spot of swimming, Cheltenham’s lido is also a community space offering other types of fitness classes, such as yoga. If you’re planning a visit, be sure to check out any other activities in the park gardens to enjoy!

To make the most of your day at Cheltenham lido, we have pulled together some tips and advice to help:

Check timetables: Before visiting the lido, it’s important to check out the timetables. There may be a class when you visit that could prevent you from being able to swim. Plan in advance to avoid disappointment.

Pack a hearty lunch: There’s lots to do at the park, so if you plan to stay for the day, don’t forget to pack a good lunch. You’ll find a park cafe for anything you may have forgotten, or if you fancy a fresh brew, but it’s always wise to bring along some of your own snacks too.

Be weather prepared: Since the pool is situated outdoors, you won’t want to visit when it’s raining. Unfortunately, you can never plan too much for weather on the Great British Isle but a quick look at the weather forecast will ensure you’re in the loop.

Don’t forget your towels: You’ll need to bring your own towels to the lido. Whilst there are changing rooms, towels aren’t provided.

Follow safety guidelines: Cheltenham lido is a safe public pool that can be enjoyed by everyone, so long as safety guidelines are followed. Adhere to the no diving rule and other rules in place.

Respect the site: The historical site has had plenty of love poured into it over time. Be respectful of the lido and the surrounding park at all times.

Is Cheltenham Lido Free to Use?

As with the majority of historical sites, Cheltenham Lido, also known as Sandford Parks Lido, is not free to use.

The facility charges admission fees that vary depending on the season, visitor’s age, and whether you are using the lido for a single swim or would like a pass. They offer discounts for children, seniors, and families, as well as special rates for early morning or evening swims. For the most accurate and up-to-date pricing, it is best to check the official Sandford Parks Lido website.

Accessibility and Surrounding Attractions

Cheltenham Lido is accessible to all visitors, featuring facilities designed to accommodate a variety of needs, including parking.

During your visit, we encourage you to explore the surrounding area too, which is rich with attractions that make Cheltenham a lovely place to visit.

Outside of the lido and Sandford Park, you’ll find stunning regency architecture including the Promenade, with its many boutiques, cafes, and elegant buildings. There is also the Montpellier District, which attracts foodies and art gallery ponderers.
